Why do we have to type text in box?

We often asked to enter some characters from a box. Follow the text, we just have to key-in exactly the same text. Ever wonder why?

This is taken from Google's page to add URL to their search index. The text we entered are used to differenciate a genuine registration from a human than a computer/machine generated code.
